Don’t look now, but another state fell into the hands of gun rights opponents.
The mad dash to enact even more draconian gun control has Washington state lawmakers in its powerful grasp. In the post-Bruen era, when there should be comprehensive respect for Second Amendment freedoms, some political leaders still insist on eradicating the right to keep and bear arms.
House Bill 1504 seeks to erect yet another hurdle between law-abiding citizens and firearm ownership. With the current crop of politicians in Washington, it will surely garner broad support from this group.
The bill would mandate that firearm owners have, through an insurance policy or bond, at least $25,000 in liability coverage per incident, be self-insured if they own more than 25 weapons, or be covered by a certificate of deposit meeting state requirements.
If a gun owner carries a policy rather than self-insuring through the state government, each weapon must have $25,000 in coverage.
Firearm range operators would have to purchase a minimum of $1 million in coverage per incident.
Does anyone honestly believe that violent criminals will get liability insurance for their weapons? Weapons that are usually stolen.
Of course not.
This latest attempt to infringe on Second Amendment rights is crystal clear in its objectives. The goal of these anti-gunners is to erect enough hurdles between good people and lawful gun ownership that the public will come to believe exercising their rights is too much trouble.
Now, imagine these same barriers being placed on freedom of speech or worship. Any reasonable person or even politician would protest over such an obstacle to fundamental rights, and justifiably so.
The argument that the state mandates car insurance to drive is simply foolish. There is no constitutional right to operate a vehicle as there is to keep and bear arms.
And any history student remembers poll taxes established solely to prevent specific demographics from fully participating in American society. Those were wrong, and this new effort in Washington is also wrong.
