It is unfortunate that college campuses are not immune to the violent crime that plagues so many American cities, but they are not. To pretend otherwise is a disservice to hardworking students who are striving to achieve a better life.

The Second Amendment also grants these young adults the right to armed self-defense, and another state took a stand for campus carry rights this month.

The beginning of July marked the implementation of the West Virginia Campus Self-Defense Act, passed by the state legislature and signed by Gov. Jim Justice (R) in 2023.

Now, college students eligible to legally carry may possess firearms on campuses across the state. State law did not prohibit this practice, but schools could unilaterally decide to ban firearms on their properties.

Gov. Justice lauded efforts by pro-gun rights lawmakers to ensure a higher level of personal safety for students.

“I’m proud to sign the Campus Self-Defense Act, which will strengthen Second Amendment protections in West Virginia.” He noted the bill’s passage brought the state in line with 11 others who already guarantee this fundamental right,

Justice added, “With this law, West Virginia will continue to be a national leader.”

When he signed the law last year, Justice said it sent a clear signal to those who would prey on young people that “if you want to mess with us, we can mess back.”

There are exceptions, as schools are allowed to regulate the possession of weapons in residence halls. However, students are free to be armed in common areas frequented on campuses, such as study rooms, lounges and dining establishments.

Firearms are also prohibited in venues with more than 1,000 people, including football stadiums, and are forbidden at campus daycare facilities.

NRA West Virginia State Director Art Thomm noted the act means the state recognizes “danger doesn’t disappear just because you’ve stepped onto campus grounds.”
