It has been said that political leaders should always take advantage of a tragedy, and Wisconsin lawmakers are following this adage to the letter.
The tragic shooting of fellow classmates and a teacher by a Madison 15-year-old afforded adults the opportunity to attempt once again to impose more gun control on law-abiding citizens.
State leaders are scrambling to enact legislation wholly unrelated to the Madison incident. Bans on popular semi-automatic weapons and universal background checks are just some of the items on lawmakers’ wish lists.
Another is an attempt to dig up so-called “red flag” legislation, which has been turned aside many times in recent years.
Despite voters and their elected representatives declining yet more Second Amendment restrictions, anti-gun forces persist in pushing their agenda through the Wisconsin legislature.
And a tragedy afforded them the excuse.
“Red flag” laws are commonly referred to as “Extreme Risk Protection Orders” and a few other state-specific names. What they all have in common is the lack of a healthy respect for due process, and a person typically loses their Second Amendment rights for up to a year when the court acts on these laws.
Intended to keep dangerous people from possessing weapons, these red flag laws are controversial because the target of the order has little or no recourse to defend themselves.
Here’s what the good people of Wisconsin already know.
The Madison shooter was a 15-year-old girl. She could not legally have a gun anywhere in the U.S. without direct parental supervision. Red flag laws would not have stopped her more than they have virtually any other suspect in recent crimes.
Madison presented an opportunity for rabid gun controllers—nothing more.
It cracked the door open for their agenda to squeeze Second Amendment rights so hard that they become meaningless. The people are not fooled.
