To be clear, no one wants to see an end to violent crime more than Second Amendment enthusiasts. These Americans are entirely on board with sensible policies that actually protect lives and property.

But to masquerade action as sound governance is foolish, and inhibiting law-abiding citizens’ rights only papers over the issue.

On Tuesday, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) announced the new state Office of Violence Prevention. Modeled on the controversial White House program, the latest creation is sure to be staffed with anti-gunners and be heavy on stripping away constitutional rights.

What it will fail to do is enhance law enforcement efforts and stiffen sentences to keep violent criminals off the streets.

Evers responded to the tragic December shooting at a Christian school in Madison that claimed two lives. What he did not address is that the suspect was a 15-year-old who was already legally prevented from possessing a firearm.

Federal law mandates that the purchaser of a long gun be at least 18, and an individual must be at least 21 to buy a handgun. Some states have more stringent requirements on the books, and none permit a 15-year-old to obtain a weapon.

The governor even cited the grossly inaccurate statistic parroted by anti-gunners that firearms are the leading cause of death among American children.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos blasted the initiative as a colossal waste of taxpayer money and lawmakers’ time.

Describing the new office as “not well thought out,” Vos declared the effort is merely “a whole bunch of touchy-feely bureaucrats that are going to go around wasting time, wasting money, and certainly not putting the effort where it’s deserved.”

A more sensible direction is strengthening police protection for Wisconsin citizens and mental health initiatives. The legislature already rejected previous gun control pushes by Evers, including universal background checks.

This latest move is nothing more than a photo-op and does nothing to address violent crime.
