It is a story that is far too common. A jilted husband or boyfriend seeks revenge against their ex-partner and pathetically resorts to violence.

It is also far too familiar that the woman is the helpless victim of repeated attacks. However, the Second Amendment can change her plight in a hurry, as it did for one woman Monday afternoon in Warren, Michigan.

Investigators report the ultimately fatal confrontation took place at around 4:20 p.m. and was only the latest in a string of domestic violence instances.

The 29-year-old male is believed to have forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s residence and began chasing her. But she had different intentions and was armed and prepared to defend herself.

In the course of being pursued, the 33-year-old intended victim was able to fire one shot at her alleged attacker, striking him in the abdomen. That brought the assault to a quick end, and her ex then attempted to flee.

He did not make it far.

Responding officers found the injured man nearby, and he was rushed to a local hospital. He did not survive.

The woman told investigators that she responded to the attack with lethal force as an act of self-defense. She said she had previously been the victim of domestic violence with her former partner and that they dated “on and off” for a time.

According to law enforcement, there exists “an extensive domestic violence history at the residence.” The investigation continues, and at last report, no charges have been filed against the intended victim.

Firearms have often been called the “great equalizer,” and nowhere is this more apparent than when an armed woman faces a violent attack. It is exceptionally advantageous that the Michigan resident had access to a loaded firearm, or the outcome could have been far different for her.
