It is a shameful situation when spaces such as schools and houses of worship are under siege by violent criminals, but that is the sad reality of the world we currently live in. This state of affairs makes the Second Amendment even more critical, as an alarming weekend incident in Texas clearly demonstrated.

The standoff unfolded at the Church at the Epicenter in Burnett County, which is northwest of Austin, just after 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The place of worship has a volunteer safety team, another sign of the perilous times. A member of the group alertly spotted what were described as two “suspicious” men lurking in the parking lot.

One of them had a rifle.

The volunteer guard acted quickly, producing his weapon and firing several shots at the suspects. Both immediately ran to a white minivan and fled north on US 281.

No one is believed to have been injured in the confrontation. The two suspects are described as wearing white clothing and sporting “headgear.”

The Lampasas Police Department issued an advisory on Facebook urging enhanced safety awareness. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Lampasas Police Department immediately called in additional staff and supervision to patrol our city, specifically our churches. We have coordinated with other local law enforcement agencies to be on high alert and ready to deter or respond immediately to any incidents that might occur.”

The sheriff’s office confirmed that state and federal agencies are now involved in the investigation.

It is increasingly common to find places of worship taking control of their own security concerns. As with schools, many see these as “soft” targets unlikely to be adequately defended against violence.

On Sunday in Texas, armed security proved that assumption to be a fallacy with nearly fatal consequences.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
