Anti-2A California County Sues Filament Maker for 3D Printers

San Diego County recently announced a package of lawsuits “aimed at protecting children, families, and public safety.” A commendable trifecta to be sure, at least at first glance, but the devil is in the details.

One of these legal actions targets Polymaker, a company that manufactures filaments essential for 3D printers. Local officials searched for, and believe they found, a link between these products and personally made firearms, prompting the suit.

Not surprisingly, attorneys from anti-gun outfit Giffords are listed as counsel.

County wants to regulate raw plastics over future uses

What is Polymaker’s alleged evil act? The company supposedly “engaged in an extensive business strategy to market its filaments outside of federal regulations to become the frame or receiver of functional firearms.”

This nebulous process, San Diego County believes, broke California’s law against businesses creating “firearm precursor parts” that may someday be a component of a weapon.

The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) blasted the move in an X post.

“When you’re legally targeting a company for a small slogan on a box, this ceases to be a 2nd Amendment issue and becomes a 1st,” the NAGR declared. “But California isn’t new to this. They’re suing companies for making stickers about 3D printing. They’re going after parts kit retailers. They just passed a law forcing all 3D printers to include “gun blocking” technology that doesn’t exist yet.”

California is throwing anything and everything against the wall to fight gun rights

That pending law is on shaky ground because the tech needed to make it work by its 2029 start date isn’t here and might not be on the horizon.

Likewise, the slippery slope the county’s attempt to regulate raw materials creates is steep, dangerous, and obvious. Targeting a plastics manufacturer reeks of wildly grasping at straws to further the crusade against the Second Amendment.
