If confronted by armed and violent criminals, the best defense, according to many who study these situations, is to have a legal firearm that you are trained on and ready to use.
Then there’s the possibility of disarming your attackers and using the weapon they wielded against them. A slim chance, to be sure, but a Chicago man last month managed to accomplish exactly that.
And now comes word that his actions were justified and that he does not face charges.
Scheme to resell merchandise apparently led to fatal shooting
According to investigators, the intended victim was targeted by suspects intending to rob him of $2,000 in a setup involving Swatch watches in September. Cameron Jamerson, 29, and 28-year-old Justin Hill of Dolton attempted to carry out their plan in a mall parking lot, but it backfired.
Prosecutors believe that the day before, Jamerson went with the man to the mall to buy watches as part of a plan to resell the watches for a much higher price. The retailer limited customers to one purchase, and the watches could privately be resold for a substantial profit.
The suspects allegedly used a second vehicle to block the intended victim’s car from getting away. But when Hill reportedly opened the vehicle door and pointed a gun at his target, the driver managed to take the firearm away from him and fire in self-defense.
Hill died from his wounds.
Questionable decision led to fighting for his life
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced on Tuesday that the shooting was justified and the man who defended himself will not face charges.
The wisdom of participating in such a scheme is questionable, to be sure, and avoiding it altogether or being armed in this situation would have been a smarter decision.
But the intended victim reacted to the potentially lethal threat and managed to walk away, and now he does not face charges. Instead of playing along, he fought back and fortunately lived to tell the tale.
