The flood of anti-gun rhetoric that blasts from the mainstream media and platforms such as TikTok might make a reasonable gun owner believe that they are an outlier. Some kind of historical holdover, an anachronism out of step with modern society.
Then there are the facts.
The Truth About Guns combined data from the Harvard T.C. Chan School of Public Health and the National Firearms Survey to reach an eye-opening conclusion. Roughly 21 million Americans became first-time firearm owners between 2019 and 2024.
Enthusiasm for firearm ownership shows no sign of waning
The first year cited, 2019, saw a rather ordinary 2.4 million new gun owners, but then the figures exploded. With the 2020 pandemic and social unrest, that total soared to 8.4 million, followed by 5.4 million in 2021.
This five-year surge tapered off as crises eased and “normalcy” returned, but Americans continue to purchase weapons to the tune of over a million a month. This demonstrates that firearm ownership is hardly some socially unacceptable act to be spoken of only in whispers.
Interestingly, the media stereotype of this demographic could not be more wrong.
Gun owners represent a wildly diverse demographic
The Harvard study revealed that Black and Hispanic adults comprised 46% of new gun owners from 2021 to 2024. Gender stereotypes are also falling by the wayside with the five-year scramble to be ready to face whatever threats may come.
Women made up a robust 46% of first-time firearm purchasers. Wives, sisters, mothers, and daughters saw what was going on around them and knew that, in many situations, a legal weapon, plus the training and will to use it, are the surest ways to avoid becoming a statistic.
Pew Research Center studies revealed that about one in ten women owned a gun in 1980.
That number soared to an estimated 25% of the female population in 2026.
This is raw data. People can, and certainly will, interpret it differently and try to bend it to their own worldview. That is their right, but there is no denying the strong American appetite for not being a victim and being one’s own first responder.
Those are facts.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
