A domestic incident that apparently began in a moving car ended when the suspect allegedly chose the wrong house to target and paid for his mistake with his life.
Investigators believe the drama unfolded when 44-year-old Billy McFarland “jumped the female driver” while a passenger in a speeding vehicle near Minden in southern Louisiana. This led to a crash, and that’s when the situation went from bad to infinitely worse for the suspect.
Knife-wielding intruder has no one to blame but himself
McFarland allegedly fled the accident and vandalized two other cars before targeting a residential home. Big mistake, and he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
Webster Parish Sheriff Jason Parker described what happened after the intruder entered through a back window.
“We learned he had a knife in his hand when he came through the window,” the lawman told reporters. “The homeowner apparently feared for his life and for the lives of others who were inside the residence. We do not anticipate any charges, but we will continue to investigate and forward the results to the District Attorney for review.”

Unless there is a shocking shift in this case, the homeowner does not face a legal predicament.
That’s because, by all credible accounts so far, the suspect set in motion and then followed through to the unfortunate end. A knife is assuredly a deadly weapon, and the target has only a moment to assess whether to fire.
Investigators quickly discovered that McFarland had a long and distinguished criminal record in the area.
The homeowner will doubtlessly have much to deal with in the coming weeks and months. It is the rare individual who could be forced into a situation where they had to take another human life or possibly lose theirs and not be affected.
Without bombshell new evidence, the person who set these tragic events in motion is easy to identify. Allegedly forcing one’s way into a stranger’s home is everything short of a blank check for the resident to resort to any means to defend themselves.
