Marijuana Users More Likely to Acquire Firearm After SCOTUS Ruling

In the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling last year that the federal ban on firearm ownership for even casual marijuana users was unconstitutional, many who partake now say they are open to acquiring a firearm.

In US v. Hemani, the 9-0 tally showed how far the federal prohibition ran from constitutional principles.

With a person who is an “unlawful user of” or “addicted to” cannabis no longer automatically banned from exercising their Second Amendment freedoms, this sizable demographic is reexamining their beliefs about the right to keep and bear arms.

Over 1 in 4 cannabis users will reconsider gun ownership

NuggMD is a digital telehealth platform that specialized in cannabis related issues that reached out to its audience to gauge their response to the new protocols.

In the results published by Marijuana Moment, a full 26% of respondents said they are “more likely to purchase a firearm” now that the blanket prohibition is over.

NuggMD’s Tyler Elson told the outlet that the federal ban caused concern among its clients.

“One of the most common questions we receive from patients is whether getting a medical card will affect their right to own a firearm,” Elson explained. “Our latest poll found that 1 in 4 cannabis consumers say the Supreme Court’s ruling makes them more likely to purchase one, which suggests how many people the federal ban was holding back.”

There is no longer a choice between Second Amendment rights and recreational marijuana use

With tens of millions of regular marijuana users nationwide, that number is significant.

To be certain, no one in the sporting community advocates that intoxicated people handle firearms. Whether influenced by marijuana, alcohol, or countless other substances, those who partake must refrain from bearing arms.

But the nation’s history and tradition of gun control only backs restrictions on those currently under the influence, not who occasionally or even regularly imbibe. As marijuana laws slowly dissipate across the nation, this course correction was long overdue.
